Steps to Convert SAC305 Wave Solder Pot to SN100C | 29 September, 2008

I was wondering if someone could tell me the steps they went through to convert a SAC305 Wave Solder pot over to SN100C. I'm having wave solder problems with SAC305 and I'm considering a change to SN100C. Didn't know if it was a -in replacement or not.

Please let me know.

Some fella from Honda once used a potatoe to clean his pot. Siad it was a pretty good idea that he learned from the japs he works for. There was a thread here on The Forum once if you could look it up.

Bob, We did the same swap a while back. Basically a pot swap which detailed a pot dump of the 305. You then will have to gut your pot and do a scrub down. Basically a good ole fashioned PM of your pot and filler back up with SN100C!

P>S The tater/potater/potatoe is optional, although I'd rather put mine in the microwave while doing the pot swap so I can eat it afterwards.

thanks for the info. I'll see what they want to do. I'm sure that a bag of potatoe's will be the way to go because it's cheap.

Be sure to peel the potatoes. I saw a guy use a potato to purify gold on the TV show Rough Science.

Seriously though I would think SAC305 to SN100C wouldn't be as bad as eutectic to leadfree.

Ask FELDER (gmbh),

they can replace the alloy (SN100 +Ge+Ni ...) or even with a special kit (FUJI Patent) or if preferred you can transform the solder in the pot w/out replace it in a reliable way.

Bob

The actual process for converting from SAC305 to SN100C is pretty painless.

Basic steps: 1) make sure your solder pot is at temp 2) de-dross 3) pull pumps/flow duct(s) and clean 4) purge pot of SAC material 5) remove any remaining dross/alloy inside the pot 6) fill with SN100C

You will typically experience a slight bit of extra drossing initially upon start up, but this will soon subside.

Hope this helps

regards

Jim
