Hello,

We are having some difficulties placing the luxeon rebel LED's. It doesn't matter what nozzle's we use, we cant run our P&P machine's on full speed without the rebel's dropping on the PCB in stead of being placed accuratly.

Therefore I would like to know if u have the same problem and what kind of nozzle u use.

They are very finiky. If you have good solder paste, and a slight down pressure, to make sure the LED is "stuck" to the board, you should be able to place it.

Pick it up on the center of the flat, NOT the lens.

Even with the vacuum turned off, the LED will stick to the nozzle for several seconds. So it's very important to make sure the LED is sticking in the solder, so it will release the LED. Otherwise it will throw LEDs everywhere.

yes, we are also picking it up on the flat part of the component. So we won't damage the dome. Just as discribed on the assembly and handling data sheet. Because the component is picked up out of the centre, it gets instable when picking it up out of the rail. This causes it to fall of before reacing the PCB. We are using Samsung CP40 & CP45 machines.

I worked on a nozzle for one of these LEDs in the past. I seem to remember that there are raised surfaces outside the pick up area. Be sure your nozzle is not hitting them, if so you will lose vacuum. A rectangle shaped nozzle would maximize your ability to place these. A compliant rectangle shaped nozzle would be absolute best. Look at Micro Mechanics R3-31 and R3-124 tips. If they do not clear the lens, the tips could be modified for extra clearance. I attached OEM instructions but they may not be for the right diode, please check.

I think we aim for the DOT on the flat. If you get too close to the lens, the taper on the nozzle hits the lens, and you don't get enough vacuum. There is not much room for error on pickup.

Thank u for al of the reactions. I'm wondering if there are other manufacturers that use rectangular nozzle's. Because when I look at the LED when it's in the reel, I doubt it could get picked up like that.

I seriously doubt that there is anyone here who is placing Rebel's on full speed, or am I wrong?

Depends on what you mean by full speed. We run them Full Speed on our Quad IIC, and IVC. But those aren't as fast as newer machines. I assume there is a speed at which the vacuum just won't be able to hold on anymore.

Siemens recommended Special nozzle-03070148 and provided GF to place this component using Siemens s-25/27. It worked fine in the beginning but after a while we saw droppage. So we moved the set-up to F5 machine which is slower. Their recommended GF is a bit fast so we modified it a bit to slow down. Siemens nozzle is not very robust that slight pick up error shifting can create loss of vacuum and drops the part. You have to pick up the part accurately all the time to have a success but this is very difficult to achieve because (1) part moves inside the reel, (2) pick-up offset sometimes change sligghtly.

Are you placing Luxeon Reblel or Rebel ES with TVS?

Hi Does anyone place the Rebel ES? It is the same as a Rebel except it has a raised bit near the edge of the flat area. I normally pick up the Rebel in the flat area using an 0805 style nozzle (Samsung CP45 CN065) but this raised bit makes it unreliable. What nozzle does anyone else use?

LED sticking in nozzles are such a problem, seem everyone has issues with this from time to time. Don't want to advertise who's nozzles worked best but will answer you back if you drop me an email.
