Vitronics XPM2 Question | 29 December, 2011

My Company has 3 XPM2 Vitronics reflow ovens, one new in 06, one new in 08 and one new in 10. They have all been relatively trouble free over the last 6 years, however recently I'm seeing a white powdery substance on my filters, for the two oldest(see picture). Nothing has changed as far as profile, paste etc. I used to change the filters every 2 weeks, now I'm lucky to get a week and a half. Maintenance schedule is the same as it's always been. Anyone out there familiar with this.

What does Vitronics say ? I personally wouldn't be too concerned about it. What do the flux catchers look like in the cooling section ?

I talked with Vitronics when I first stated seeing it, they were a bit perplexed too. The cooling fins get the same powdery buildup also, I actually see it from the cooling zones all the way to the filters. I'm actually not too concerned as it cleans up quickly, just curious on the reason it started happening.

Well it can only be one of two things. Flux residue from your paste or some type of out gassing from the boards you are running.

Had you cleaned the inside of the machine just before this started? I once had an oven that was cleaned with some sort of oven cleaner and it contaminated PCB Assemblies when they ran it. This residue was not visible to the eye but caused soldering issues on the TH parts. Took some time to trace it down.
