Yesterday, my Quad IVc was on, but not running. There was a power fluctuation. I immediately got a motor err #5. I checked all the doors were closed, tried to home / reset the machine, and then turned it off and back on. Neither breaker was tripped. I couldn't figure out the issue. Today, I went to turn it on, and when i flip the main breaker on, it immediately trips, whether or not the motor power breaker is on makes no difference. Can anyone speculate as to the issue, or some steps to track it down?

Have you checked to make sure the front or back E-stop is not pushed in?

Yeah, it comes on for a couple of seconds, then trips. When it comes on, before it trips, i can look into where the axis drives are, and the z-axis has a red and green led lit, while the others only have a green one. Then it trips. Maybe that drive is problematic?

Sounds like you may have a z-axis problem. I would check the axis out and run the z rod up and down by hand to see if there is a problem....sticking,sensor/flag broken....etc. Maybe you can unplug the z-axis card and then turn the machine on to see if the breaker doesnt trip.

Z axis seems to move as it should, the flag that goes through the C shaped sensor is not broken. I have gotten it to stay on everytime i start it up now (I did NOT change anything, just unplugged it for awhile, then plugged it back in an flipped the breakers on). The z-axis card maintains a red LED and I get a motor error #5. There is a small clicking from the z-axis motor, and if i move the pulley or belt, with it on and in this error state, it will jump a few steps. If i remove the z-axis, i get the same error. I checked the fuse and the seating of the chips on the card. All looks ok. Wiring to motor and into connectors that plug into the card seem solid.

your card is probably bad.....you can ohm out the motor and cable if you want...

z motor windings 1.36 ohms z motor cable and windings 1.82 ohms

That's good info for making sure the motor is good before plugging in and possibly over-current another stepper drive. Do you happen to have pin-outs for the DB15 on the drive board, pot settings and current limit of this drive? We keep several stepper drives in stock for customer projects, and could be running in short time if one of those would work. If not, who can I call for wiring / spec info on this board?

Put up an e-mail address and i can send you a paper on setting up the current level to see if the board is working properly. The z-axis and theta-axis are swappable.....you just need to change the dip switch settings.
