Do you just wish to use the setup as a visual aid to alignment. In which case this is not a bad idea. the only issue you will find yourself finding, is he field of view you will need to get your alignment. I have done this sort of thing with a hybrid printer where we needed 20 layers aligned. Over 20 print cycles, but the field of view was 3 x 4 inches. And the camera was about 2 feet above the board. No doubt your setup will be different!

Generally, that should not be a problem. Software for this purpose is pretty simple, the main issue is how accurately pcb carrier will be positioned at both ends. This is purely dependent on printer's mechanics. I have an old DEK247 and thought about doing the same, but it has issue when board pulls out of the print area - carrier does not stop at exactly the same position each time...

Hi Deni,

Thanks for the input. That is my concern as well. Before getting to far I will try some repeatability runs and see if it is feasible.

What is your experience with semi-auto printers and the primary issues you contend with? I'd like to step up to a used auto printer at some point but we're still getting our feet wet with smt and semi-auto seems like a better place for us to start.

We have DEK248 and Ultraprint100 printers. Ultraprint100 has custom video hardware while DEK has PC-based vision, which I prefer. Both perform roughly the same, and each has some design advantages over the other. We do routinely print 0.5mm pitch TQFP's , 0402's and some BGA's without problems (at least with print accuracy), so...

The vision on our semi-automatic printers allows the operator to draw a box around a pad for reference. Then as long as both reference pads are lined up on consecutive boards, it's aligned.

Great idea! That could be easier to write a program and also easier to see for the operator. Thanks for the information!
