Hi there, I'm looking to add automatic label application to my SMT line and I'm looking for people's feedback on what options they have tried and what has worked well for them.

The volume isn't hugely high but I need the label to be consistent and on't really want to pay someone to place 5000 labels at a time!

Thanks

You need to look at Hover-Davis they make label feeders for SMT placement equipment.

Have you looked into laser marking?

We stated placing labels on our lines for a couple years now and over the past year it has really taken off. Hover-Davis is the place you need to contact in order to get the correct feeder for your machines. They will want a single column label with about 100 labels to test the feeder with and setup your feeder for you. The biggest challenge we had was getting the correct label adhesive to ensure we didn't have the shrink a dink issue during reflow process. Good Luck

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I need to place the label prior to the placement machine as I need the placement machine to read the barcode of the board as it enters the machine to provide component traceability.

only in passing as I think the cost would be pretty high but interested in info if you have it

Here's an idea; buy a pcb conveyor and design a simple label applicator to mount to it. Maybe replace the logic with your own or replace the PLC in the conveyor with your own solution. Shouldn't be much more than a few sensors and and a stepper motor. If you are placing the label on a bare pcb before printing and placement this would be a lot easier than one populated with components. Use a commercially available design for labeling products like the one in the video link below:

Full disclosure; I represent ASYS in the southeastern US. Depending on PCB size and mark requirements you can get a laser marker for under $100,000. It can be set up as an island to mark batches of PCB prior to them going to the assembly line. ASYS also offers a stand alone label applicator. You can see information on their Insignum products here; http://www.asys.de/agweb/america/products-solutions/insignum-marking While CAPEX is higher for laser marking, you don't have on going label expense or related issues like the shrinky dink problem mentioned above. Good luck on your investment.

Hi John,

We picked up a used laser marker (Asys ALS03) last year for around 30K euros and it has done approx 2M codes (we use 6mm square QR) in the last year without fault - it reads them all back to confirm which is handy. We also use labels, and have used Hoover-Davis before, but these can be removed.

We mark on all colours including Red, Blue, Black and White resist.

Have a look and see who is good in your area - Asys works for us as the local support in our conunty is excellent - we are near a couple of Multinationals, but equally there are other good machines out there.

Hope that helps,

Rob.
