I have a question about the Gerber file format for PCB prototype. The CAD program I am using is a DOS version and generates Gerber files in the RS-274-D format. However, ALLPCB require the Gerber files in the RS-274-X format. I have to approach other people to convert my RS-274-D files to RS-274-X format so that I can send them for production. This is not secure since they can make a copy of my artwork, and they do not seem eager to always do this favour for me. The question I have is whether the can convert my RS-274-D files,also it would mean that some or other part of the Drill file would also have to be updated manually to get it right for NC machine,alright?

RS-274X file contains the complete description of a PCB layer image without requiring any external files. It has all the imaging operators needed for a PCB image. Any aperture shape can be defined as well as positive and negative objects. Maybe that is why ALLPCB and some other PCB manufacturers require RS-274X as format for fabricating. RS274D contain just NC info and requires external aperture file, RS274X combine aperture and NC info together. You can download RS274X format specs and learn them, it's easy to make RS274X from RS274D + aperture file (basically you copy the aperture info at the beginning of the RS274D, but as any manual operation may add errors. My advice is to switch to more decent CAD program which can generate RS274X gerbers.
