Quad IV-c feeder error | 1 February, 2019

One of my 8mm feeders is blinking the red led after the pick-up.

With both buttons the motor works as expected (forward/backward), but after the nozzle pick-up the motor moves forward and then the red led blinks. pressing the buttons the green led lits, but after another pick-up, the red LED blinks again.

All the mechanicals are working (apparently).

Any thoughts?

Is it indexing at the correct pitch when you push the forward button?

I really can't remember much about those machines but it seems like that's an indication that it's not programmed correctly.

I'll be bobpan knows, regardless. ;)

yes it's moving at the wrong pitch, about 3 components a time.

Is the programming you talking about at the microcontroller AT85C55 or that serial memory 24C04? Or there is some procedure on the Quad to adjust this?

Commponent pitch programming is performed via the buttons on the feeder. I don't remember enough to walk you through it but there are people here that do - I'm sure you'll get some help shortly.

If not, go to http://www.precision-repairs and use the email there to contact Bob.

Hey Steve, I wrote to Bob, but he doesn't reply yet. Digging around, I found these:

HANDLING COMPONENT VARIETY The adjustable Pocket Index function enables handling a variety of component tape reels or special component packaging. The following instructions set the index (tape advance) after a pickup. Each tape index advances 4mm.

CAUTION: Press the tape feeder front and rear buttons slowly, or the tape feeder will not set properly.

1. Simultaneously press the front and rear buttons on the tape feeder to initiate Program Mode. Both LEDs should be off.

2 Press the rear button twice, and the front button once (Pocket Programming Mode). LEDs should illuminate every time a button is pressed.

3 .Use the following table to properly index the tape feeder. The LEDs should flash while pressing buttons. The sequence is stored automatically when the last button is pressed.

INDEX PROGRAMMING TABLE Use this table when programming the tape feeder for indexing between 4mm and 32mm. Press the front and rear buttons in the order listed in the table.

4mm - REAR REAR REAR 8mm - REAR REAR FRONT 12mm - REAR FRONT REAR 16mm - REAR FRONT FRONT 20mm - FRONT REAR REAR 24mm - FRONT REAR FRONT 28mm - FRONT FRONT REAR 32mm - FRONT FRONT FRONT

POCKET POSITION PROGRAMMING

This procedure ensures the components are properly centered at the tape feeder pickup point (over spring stabilizer). NOTE: The feeder can be reset at any time by removing it from the feeder base and reinserting it. This disconnects feeder power and resets the program to the last pocket position.

1. Simultaneously press the front and rear buttons on the tape feeder to enter the Programming Mode. The two LEDs should go off.

2. Press the rear button three times to enter Pocket Positioning Mode. The LEDs should illuminate with each button press.

3. Press and release the front button to slowly advance the tape or press and hold the button to quickly advance the tape for component centering adjustments. The component pocket should be centered along the witness mark (notch in metal) on the left side of the tape feeder.

4. Press and release the rear button to store the pocket position. The LEDs should not flash. If the LEDs flash when pressing the rear button, press either front or rear button to stop the flashing LED and repeat steps 3 and 4.

5. Interrupt the pickup sensor beam with your finger. The tape should advance and center the component. If it does not, repeat steps 1 through 4.

Anyway, after both procedures, the feeder still advancing more than 4mm (like 12mm or so)

SOLVED

The LED/phototransistor was a little of the center on the "index wheel" (don't know a better name, its the gear that pulls the component strip).

The wheel works with a LED from one side and a phototransistor from the other, through a hole on the metal frame. After desoldering both from the PCB, I resoldered realigning the terminal leads and the feeder starts to work perfectly again.

Good job.... Sorry i didnt see this post...some of us were busy snow tubing over the weekend...haha.

Many times over the years....the rubber belt inside the feeder will deposit material inside. Sometimes it ends up on the sensors and blocks the light. Blowing out the feeder usually solves this problem. I have had a bad sensor or 2 but its kinda uncommon.
