Benefit of GridLok screen printer ? | 4 January, 2020

Hi,

I am asked to review a screen printer to buy, and someone told me GridLok screen printer.

Can anyone advise me what benefits GridLok offer? And which models from which suppliers are recommendable?

Any advice will be appreciated. John

I don't believe that there is a Grid-Lok stencil printer. Grid-Lok is a board support add-on product for placement and printer machines developed by Ovation Products [ Bethlehem, PA, USA, 1-855-GRID-LOK or +1-484-893-1028, info@grid-lok.com ovation-products.com] Currently, Grid-Lok is a subsidiary of ASM/DEK [ ASM Assembly Systems USA Inc. +888 768 4357 (press 2) smtparts.us@asmpt.com ]

So, I'd guess that the person making the recommendation to you was suggesting that you add a Grid-Lok to whatever printer that you acquire.

Production Solutions [ 12675 Danielson Court, 403, Poway, CA 92064; production-solutions.com 858-486-1088 F858-225-1881 info@production-solutions.com ] produces a product that competes with Grid-Lok.

I would recommend quik-tool. Jim Bernhard essentally the inventor of Grid lok left when they went to DEK. Started quik-tool, we use grid-lok in our printers, quik-tool in our Panasonic P&P instead of support pins. Like quik-tool alot more. JBernhard@quik-tool.com.

Hello John,

We don't want you to feel offended in any way. Very often people are assigned to the wrong task. Picking manufacturing equipment is not as easy as picking a breakfast. There is a lot to consider when making the right choice. Later we end up with some weird choice and we wonder who picked it and why? From your post, it seems that you are not an expert in the field. If you don't have anyone in your company who can help, than hire an expert. On this forum you can find a lot of them. Good luck in your journey.

I have worked with both Gridlock and conventional pin support mostly on DEK machines. Gridlock allows to reduce greatly changeover time in hi mix/low volume environment when switching sides on double sided boards. It also eliminates guesswork when manually placing pins. With conventional support on heavy populated boards, take care to place pins precisely, as they can damage parts on the bottom side, or make such a support unstable, compromising the print quality. Either way, with conventional pin support, an experienced operator will take no more than 5-10 min. to build a support for the board. Occasionally they can use acrylic templates with dots, or you can use mirror to verify placement. Most machines I have seen have three to five bars of gridloks between the conveyor rails, working in both manual or automatic mode. In my opinion it reduces changeover time, and prevents ruining parts on the bottom. The only drawback I noticed is occasionally dripping paste from a squeegee will stick to metal cylinders and eventually will prevent them from extending, so it needs to be periodically cleaned.
