Back in the 50's, 60's and 70's gold plated boards were all the rage for high reliability. test equipment, milspec etc. Nowadays only edge connectors are gold plated. Immersion plated gold is also used but it doesn't last the distance like gold plated.

The vertical tin spray process is difficult to flatten the pads, which brings difficulty to the SMT mounting, and the shelf life of the tin plate is very short.The gilding plate solves these problems. We've made the decision to move towards Gold Immersion on our PCBs to eliminate flatness issues with QFNs and BGAs. Land/component pad geometry, population density, and other factors, have made it necessary to ensure a near perfectly flat surface that standard "hot air leveling" just doesn't achieve.

Flatness is only half of the advantage. Gold doesn't corrode. There are other flat surfaces but do not last as long as gold.

I'm not 100% sure which type of gold you're asking about, but if you're talking about hard gold plating, I think the most common use is to provide a durable surface for things like membrane switch contacts because it resists abrasion and other mechanical wear better. It's not good to solder to, though.

If you're just asking about the common use of gold as a soldering surface, i.e. ENIG (electroless nickel, immersion gold) it's primarily for it's flatness advantage over HASL finishes (much better for reflowing high density packages), and it's ability to maintain solderability over time.

The gold plating on PCB has a 40% higher resistivity, and it is much more expensive. So gold is not used instead of copper for conductors. Last month I purchased some PCB from Cplfpc and Greatpcb.

Why gold plating on PCB? | 5 April, 2020

1. To protect the nickel and copper under gold plating from oxidization before soldering. Gold plating can extend the PCB self-life and improve the solderability for 2nd re-flow.

2. Provide a good bonding strength. For Chip on Board process that Gold is the best metal for the wire bond to get a good bonding strength.

3. Provide a good electronic contact and reliability. For example, spring contact on PCB or keypad pressing contact on PCB.
