Has the pandemic and the economic fallout from it cause you and your company to rethink your China/Asia outsourcing strategy? Also have your thoughts changed regarding JIT/Kanban/Lean manufacturing practices in view of the present situation?

Taiwan, Korea & Thailand have been safe options from China. Taiwan and Korea would be first choices. Thailand would be second, most Thailand facilities are at capacity due to taking in their China side production. So it may be a month or two before their capacity opens back up.

I sell for a USA Owned PCB shop out of Taiwan. Taiwan has made it through the virus with minimal effects are running at full employment. It will be interesting to see how people deal with China business in the future.

There are a couple of other countries that should be on your list to considered in at least some circumstances. Canada and The United States.

I work for a CEM in Toronto, at the end of last year before all this, we had a largish job for a customer in California. They had had work done in China but needed something done fast and well. There were technical glitches and their instructions were far from perfect. When we started building it, I thought that there was no way we could finish the first shipment by the time they wanted. But we kept trying to do better and met the goal and then some. Just this week, we got parts for a new job from them. I don't think we would have been in the running if the Canadian dollar was on par with the US.

Did you get the second job mainly because of having a low price, or mainly because of your perseverence and successful completion of the first job? Do you think the sketchy documentation of the first job limited your customer's choices in the first place?
