Pick&Place Defects may be from supplier & potential solution | 11 April, 2021

Hi guys, I'm a newbie for SMT field. Currently, I'm facing a problem that there were many defects such as tombstone, missing, skewed, billboarding that happened with 1 type component (Resistor 0201) with a specific supplier X (we have many supplier but defects only occur with this supplier). We're using Fuji machine for pick&place. I'm suspecting that due to the relative position of the component inside the cavity of reel, the cavity is large for component's movement. I mean that during feeding component process, the component may be skewed inside the reel (moved forward by inertia) then the nozzle picks the skewed component causing missing/tombstone/skew on the PCBs. We've tried to check and reteach the pick up point but it didn't work well. If we tighten "tolerance check" it may cause big attrition by release not good component. I need advise and any potential solutions for this case. Thanks !!!

Hi Tonies,

Do you place 0201's from any other supplier? if so, do you see similar issues on those parts?

There are a lot of things that can go wrong on 0201 & 01005 that aren't the part manufacturer - part data, printing, placement, nozzle selection & condition, placement speed, air kiss, reflow, footprint design among a few.

Unless this is a custom resistor the manufacturer is going to be churning out 100's of millions of these a year so it's unlikely to be the tape. Also your machine should be viewing the part on a camera to verify the pick up & alignment, so this should mitigate any bad pickups.

may I ask what type of fuji machine are you using for placement? Also what vision type are you using?
