Thickness of layers en MLCC ? | 22 September, 1999

Dear all,

First, I'd like to thank every one of you who have been a great help for my last questions.

Then, I have heard that in multilayer ceramic capacitors, each layer of ceramic was about 3 micrometers at least. When adding the layer (which I don't know) of two electrodes, I find it quite strange that some manufacturers are able to produce 100uF's Z5U capacitors in 1206 standard chips, which means more than 100 layers of dielectric with two electrodes each time. I guess that the layers are much thiner but I haven't read any articles nor books confirming that idea.

If one of you can give a piece of advice about how thick the thinest layer of ceramic is and the same for the Pb/Pd or Ag electrodes are.

Thanks for all. Regards. Jeanjean.

Not for nothing, my concerns with MLCCs are mundane. They are:

Have the parts arrived on time? If so, are they the correct value? Do we have the correct amount? Are they on tape? Will they be in the kit? If they havent arrived on time, where are they? What do we have to do to get them here?

Maybe get yourself "Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors," Ceramic Transactions, Volume 97, Editors: Jau-Ho Jean, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan; T.K. Gupta, Northrop Grumman, Baltimore, Maryland, USA; K.M. Nair, E.I. du Pont de Nemours, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA; and K. Niwa, Fujitsu, Japan (http://www.acers.org/pubs/books/elec/multilayerelectronic.asp)

... alto I can't vouch for it, the authors may be able to help you with leads.
