Axial Resistors in ammo tape, any machine out there to cut different lengths of tape | 27 January, 2022

We have to make several different kits containing 5,7 or 17 resistors (axial leads). These resistors are supplied in ammo boxes or reel. We used to cut the tape by hand with scissors, but we need to cut 10000's of these per week. Has anyone ever seen a machine that can do this specifically for these type of taped resistors. Buying resistors in bulk is not a good option because of the time it takes to count and package each kit. Also keeping the resistors on the tape keeps them from being bent during handling.

You could use an office guillotine with a carriage to support the reel mounterd to it's side?

It's not that model, but that's what we use.

I have a GPD CF8 that does a good job at this. I believe they may even have an option to count components that have been formed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHI1aEJ89jw

You might want to look at a sequencer. It would be over kill but might work for you. If you trust the people to use the right resisters in the right places you could even program the entire kit of resisters. You would still have to cut to separate each kit set.

Guys, read to the end. I need to keep the resistors on the tape, not to separate them from the tape. The machine should only cut the tape according to the number of resistor selected. I need a belt of 7 resistor, I cut the tape every seven resistor. I end up with an ammo belt 7 resistor long. The customer will separate the resistors from the tapes by cutting the leads.

That was my first tool I made for that purpose, a mini guillotine with marks showing quantities of 7, 11, etc, that they needed. Pull tape to mark, cut, repeat... After tens of thousands, it gets old. Also repetitive injuries became a factor.

A few years ago i too was making up some kits, i was cutting resistors, diodes, chokes and only those who have experienced this situation will know how time consuming this simple task can be. I too looked around for some type of machine but couldn't find anything so i was going to make something myself but then i stopped doing the kits.

I hope to start doing the kits in the near future and if i do make something i will post here. In the meantime- good luck.

No idea if something like this is available commercially, but it would be easy enough to make one for a few dollars using an arduino to control it.

If you have a local MakerSpace ( or similar ), contact them and ask if they could come up with a solution for you. Makers love making useful stuff .
