Opinions on Yamaha YM84V II

We are considering a used Yamaha YM84V II to add to our existing compliment of stand-alone machines. The brochure states that it can place 0603 devices as standard. Is this true? Do you know of any quirks with these machines? Any comments would be much appreciated.

Can anyone tell me why Philips would obsolete my feeders. I am trying to add a newer machine to my line and I am told that the feeders from my 84VZ no longer work. Is this true?

Is this true? | The feeders were all compatible from the Philips CSM 66 up to the CSM 84, 84V, 84 VZ, 84V II. There is just a change in hight to the feeders of the 84V III. (You might have to cut off part of he safety door to use the other feeders). So these feeders go back to machines designed about 1990. I guess there just had been some changes in the machines since, like speed etc. The GEM series is really quite a different generation, isn`t it? So if you want to stay compatible you have to stick with the CSM series, otherwise you don't have a great advantage of sticking with Philips. Therefore I don't believe they are changing the feeder type on purpose just to make you buy new feeders.

Yes, the GEM series feeders are quite different. In fact, if you put CSM feeders on a GEM machine, you will probably break nozzles and crash the head due to the fact that the CSM feeders have a mechanical arm that sticks up toward the front of the body . The GEM feeders are also vacuum actuated through a small hole in the rear mounting pin. Hope this helps. -Clint |

Specifically, the AB Chuck and b Nozzle (ABb) combination is recommended for 0603. The standard configuration would normally have two mechanical heads and one vision head. Head one was normally equipped with the ABb conbination while head two was normally equipped with the FGc combination (for small SOIC's). Be careful, the configuration on the machine you are considering may be different.

Mechanical feeders for the CSM-66/84/VZ are not usable on a GEM machine. This covers all 8mm and most 12mm tape feeders.

Air driven CSM-66/84/VZ feeders can be used on a GEM machine with modification to both the feeder and the GEM machine. The modification involves changing air fittings on the machine and removing hardware from the feeder. This is a compromise situation that is not appropriate for all situations. The best application is for adapting a few large format tape feeders. This adaptation has allowed some of our customers to reduce the cost of adding a GEM machine to an existing CSM-66/84... equipped line or site.

You may wish to do a search as this subject has been brought up before. Look under Yamaha and Philips (Yamaha makes the CSM/GEM machines for Philips). Good luck! Oh, Philips has a web site, it might help.
