I am currently in the process of trying to justify new equipment in my factory. I currently have Siemens siplace 15 series machines. I don't feel thins equipment is right for high mix/ medium to low Volume. I am running up against a in house contigent who disagree. Please provide your thought on this situation. Are you using extra feeder tables that you can setup off line and than just exchange for the ones you had in the machines for the previous batch? This way the Siplace should not be too bad. Otherwise for fast change and low volume you might look at machines like Mimot, Mydata, Quad? Isn't the GSM a very good choice to place difficult components in a high volume line behind some chip shooter? I don't know about running this machine by itself - it seems to be too expensive to place chips on it. | You can prepare your setup off line, using additional tables, and exchange very fast just sending the new program and checking using a barcode reader. Also you can edit a setup program with mixed feeders between PCB families. You can decrease your changes of setup daily. Regards

Is cost an issue? I evaluated Siemens Siplace about a year ago and the price per placement was twice what Phillips Machinery has to offer. We too are a high mix/low PCb count shop. Also, Siemens has many hidden costs and the references I talked to indicated the machines are "touchy". Generally speaking the most critical factors I evaluate are price per placement, price per square foot, features, reliability, maintainability. Good Luck! Phillip, in what way are the machines "touchy"? What are these hidden costs you mention? We have S15, S20, F3 and F4 equipment. I have not found that there are any hidden costs. We have additional change over tables, feeders and other options (component bar code reader, nozzle changers, Remote Service) we see as useful. The change over tables as well as the extra feeders are all part of allows for a quick change over and should be part of a high mix low/mid volume operation. Other than an occasional feeder (72mm or vibe linears), consumables (nozzles, filters, lubricants)and my initial spare parts kit I have not encountered additional costs. Rob, I think the change over on the Quad QSP2 is about as easy and fast as it can get without swapping out the feeder bases. In a high mix environment I think it is worth looking at. Regards,
