Baking PWBs prior to wave solder | 16 December, 2002

We have always baked our assembled boards prior to wave solder, but have recently learned that there are some companies out there who don't. I checked with one of my supervisors, and he said that baking is recommended but not required. I'm wondering what other companies out there are doing about this situation and how they determine which to bake; trial and error, vendor or customer tells them, or what. An info on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

We do not bake any of our boards prior to wave solder. If we did we would have one heck of a large oven. I would assume you are concerned about moisture sensitive components. In most cases your top side parts should only get to 80 degrees centigarde which in most cases is within the component operating temperature. If you had some moisture sensitive components on the bottom side you may have a problem not baking the board. It also depends on the time between reflow and when you are going to wave the assemblies. I hope this helps but check out your designs before making a change.

Randy, are you baking initially for surface mount? These boards I'm talking about are just thru hole, so there would not be any bake between baking for part marking and wave solder.

No parts or boards are baked unless they are moisture sensitive and were left out too long and that is for reflow only. In your case there should be no reason to bake becouse the boards should be vacuum packed as they come in as well as any moisture sensitive parts.

Baking boards in a nonvalue added activity. Quit doing it!!! As a routine production activity, it is either: * Totally unnecessary ... OR * Band-aid to cover for problems in fabrication, purchasing, or storage methods.
