A Standard for Electronic Componets Discription | 28 June, 2000

A portion of our business is quick turn prototypes. The difficult part of doing this effectively is component descriptions. One customer will call a component SSOP-20, another will call his SSOP-20 but the lead pitch will be different, another will call his SOP-20 that may match something else. This leads to a lot of time lost on the machines fixing the descriptions in the programs. Is there a document somewhere, possibly a standard, for component descriptions?

Paul, Most of this naming mojo happens during Gerber to Cad translation. If the Gerber software does not have a pre-defined name for a particular foot-print, The user has to supply one. Getting the supplier of the Gerber, or your CAD/CAM group to eliminate all errors prior to first build is most likely not a possibility( that's why proto is so much FUN! ). If you want to take a crack at trying, IPC has a list of all known footprints and the tolerances for each. If you are having problems locating them leave me an e-mail and I will help. This only works if all the pad locations on the board are sized to optimum specs for a particular component desciption. Remember to make sure everybody uses the same descriptions,(they can differ according to part height, and since you won't have the part, you need to take that dimension out of play.. at least until Software gets the CAD.) JAX, I want to eliminate as much of the confusion up front. If I can point all the folks involved in the design and manufacture to a single source for component descriptions, be it a TI data book, IPC or JEDEC standard, or some other source, I think there would less pain. There would still be the odd part and height issues, but there would be much less surprises.

IPC publishes a great little book on component identification. It's $20 for members, $40, for non-members. You can get it right off their website.

Best luck from a guy that feels like you. Unfortunately, the info is there, but nobody will respect it. If you get your people to stick to the standard, please tell me how you did it.

It looks like the JEDEC Standard is a place to start. I think it would be possible to have people follow the standard internally. Getting the external customers to follow will be difficult at best. But if its possible to develop a close relationship with a small customer base, common information such as BOM formats and part descriptions developed and shared. Customer benefits would be realized in fast turns in prototype runs and internal benefits of less machine downtime.
