Hi, We are based in Korea, a manufacturer of electronics for automotives. We are a small company, so no "corporative discount" is applicable to us.

We currently have 2 SMT lines and are about to invest one more. Our production is high mix / low volume / 5 ~ 6 changes per day. We work 24 hours a day, 6 ~ 7 days a week.

Our current SMT lines are: 1) Samsung machines: they are very old. 2) DEK printer - HSP 4797 - GSM2 - Vitronics Reflow Oven.

Our major concerns are: 1) Changeover time: it takes over 30 minutes 2) Spare parts: expensive and very few stock at local agency 3) Technical supports: not very reliable. Sometimes the engineers just suppose the cause, and this takes many weeks to solve a problem. 4) Training, PM..

We are considering the following machines: 1) Printer: DEK/EKRA 2) Chip placement machine: UIC ADVANTIS / SIEMENS S27 / SAMSUNG 3) IC placement: UIC GSM2 / SIEMENS F5 / SAMSUNG 4) Reflow Oven: Vitronics XPM2 / SEHO / SAMSUNG

Just looking at specs from the vendors, I really cannot decide; prices are quite different, though. All seem good at some aspects: 1) SIEMENS: quick changeover 2) UIC: we could use the same feeders and spare parts 3) SAMSUNG: it's korean - quick service, spare parts' availability, price.

I would appreciate your opinion on these machines, and please let me know if there are other aspects to consider.

I would highly recommend Assembleon OpalXII/TopazXII for your low volume high mix applications. You could perform changeovers very quickly. Of course it depends on how many feeders are required per product. If you buy for example, 2 OpalXII machines from Assembleon, you get 200 feeder positions and you can add an LCS (Large Component Sequencer) for Tray handling which does not even waste feeder positions. In such case, the offline optimizer can make programs such that you need not change any feeders for changeover. Also since the conveyor width is automatic as standard, you can even do rolling changeovers if you install the Barcode reading facility. The machine will read the barcode and understand the product and automatically change the program and start mounting!!

And Assembleon keeps a stock of spares at Singapore and have highly qualified service engineers!

I would also like to add some more features of Assembleon XII platform.

You had mentined that you already have GSM machine whose feeders could be used if you buy a new GSM machine. Assembleon XII machines such as Opal XII, can use GSM feeders as well. You can have "Adaptive" feeder trolleys for GSM feeders, as well as for Assembleon feeders, or other third party feeders which are interchangeable on the machine. This preserves your feeder investment while taking advantage f the latest production technologies.

Also since you mentioned that you are a low volume high mix users, probably sometimes you may be getting some chip components in small strips also. Assembleon XII series equipment can even handle these small strips using the Strip component feeder.

All in all, with Assmbleon XII series you get the latest technology capable of mounting from 0201s to 45x45mm sq. QFPs, BGAs, Micro BGAs, CSPs, FLip Chips etc. with options such as Coplanarity checker, touch screen interface with Windows NT operating system, label feeding, flash memory programming allowing just-in-time programming of flash memory prior to placement, and LARGE BOARD CAPABILITY - upto 33.5 x 25.5 inches boards!!!!

If you need further information please write to me at vinit.verma@prosemtechnology.com

You have alot of advantages staying with the Samsung. The CP60 is a great machine. With the removable carts for setting up in advance giving quick change over. Very good price and better service for you than we get here. Their parts teach on these is increadibley easy. The CP45 is good but needs alot of help with the lighting for the fly vision.

I don't know what the availability is in your area but You might want to look into Mydata. The machines are not as fast as some but very versatile and have faster changover than any of the machines that I have seen.

PS. I work for a contract manufacturer and we use these for our high mix stuff. I am not associated with them in any other way.

I second the Mydata call. We too are using them for Contract manufacturing and find the changeover to be extremely fast.

From my perspective, regardless of the size of your company, you want the best value for your money and latest, greatest in innovation. For pick and place, while Mydata, Siemens and Assembleon/Yamaha all have some cool and worthy concepts and worth examining, I think Universal, with either the GSM2 and/or the Advantis platform pulls ahead in the race. From what I've seen, they have a very good handle on quick change-over as well as overall flexibility. And yes, you can use the same feeders (Assembleon has a good concept with regard to the "adaptors" but they can be a bit pricey). In the past couple of years, UIC has done some impressive engineering, including some very aggressive cost-engineering resulting in equipment that is efficient and has good ROI. Regarding printers, while Ekra has developed a very straight-forward and easy to use machine, DEK has made quite a few refinements and they have developed an excellent intelligence base that makes, not only the machine, but the entire printing process, very clear and is beneficial to any user. I also, personally, like the Pro-Flow head and find it very beneficial for high mix situations. For an oven, I would take a look at the Heller (which are being manufactured in Korea). That's my opinion. And we don't sell equipment, either, new or used. But, as SMT process consultants, we certainly see a lot and work with a lot in our travels. Phil Z ITM Consulting, USA

Hey Vinit,

Enough with the sales pitch already. Assembleon cannot even sell Yamaha machines in Korea. Yamaha sells direct in all of Asia.
