Customer has tried OA and NC alloy solder pads may be nickel Chromium. Non-wetting issue. Scraping pad alloys a bit of adhesion of solder but no intermettalic bond. Any suggestions?

Bare inconel is NOT ment to take solder, because * Nickel develops a tenacious oxide layer that is very difficult to remove since the nature of the oxide is very dense, coherent, etc. * Chromium is difficult to solder. * Iron is difficult to solder.

Nickel will form intermetallics when soldered, providing either: * Surface is protected from corrosion. Commonly, a precious metal [eg, Pd, Ag, Au, etc] plating provides this protection, but copper is used in some applications ... OR * Surface oxidation is removed just prior to soldering. The fluxes your customer is using are inadequate. Check with your flux supplier for recommendations.

It's possible that scrapping the metal surface prior to soldering exposes non-oxidized metal that can take solder.

We used to use Cobar paste on Nickel - very aggressive.

Hi Steve,

Info & distributors at http://www.cobar.com

From memory I believe it was S6M-323XM3S, but I'll have a good dig for the info when I get the chance.
