Can anyone tell me what type of material that the standard IPC SMT trays are made of ?? I am trying to mill some out however I need to order the correct ESD safe material ??

There no IPC standard for trays, but look here: http://www.esda.org/documents/S541FINAL-04-09-03.pdf

... and the reason you want to make these trays, rather than buying them from someone who sits around all day making them is ...

Thanks Dave, The reason I want to make one in-house is cost. This is not a standard part and after contacting a couple of vendors ($1,000 plus for first tray) I decided it would be much cheaper to do it in house with our CNC.

Scotty: If you have excess CNC machine capacity, it might be economic, but if your machine and design resources are loaded-up the $1000+ sounds cheap. [Just another voice screaming in the dark.]

Does it have to be made out of plastic?

Wouldn't some stock aluminum plate with milled out pockets work just as well?

Would the aluminum offer the same, better, or worse ESD protection?

My thoughts on metal trays:

One problem with a metal tray relating to ESD is its conductivity. Most trays are conductive but have resistance or a disipative nature. If you were to place a "charged" component into a metal tray that had an uncontrolled path to ground you would shock the part from its discharge into the tray. You can load parts with the tray on one of your ESD mats and then you don't have to woory about it.
