Shelf Life of Components (solderability) | 15 February, 2005

Hello everybody, according to your experience, what is the allowed or suggested (by Suplliers,or Standards,or best pratics) shelf life for components (SMD/PTH) from fabbrication date to the soldering date ?

Let's consider best case when components are still conatined into original pakaging and stored in a not critical environment.

In my experience, I was never hable to get a clear answer from Comp Suppliers, like: not leaded components could be around 2 years or more, leaded components almost the same time, and for sure particular attention for MSD comps. Let's not talk about Brokers or Procuremant Dept, for them very often the most important points are: PN, Qty, Price, Availabilty and Delivery .

Component shelf life depends on: * Solderability protection type. * Quality of process and materials used in applying solderability protection. * Duration of time from when the solderability protection was applied. * Packaging used in component storage. * Environment used to store component until soldered. * Handling methods used on the component until soldered.

We've blissfully soldered components with five year-old date codes. We've had a tough time soldering components with two year-old date codes.

Thank you Dave, that is almost the asnswers we use to give to our Customers when auditing they ask for component shelf life. But as you can imagine, they whant to see a quick information right on the label (on Reels, on trays, etc) like: Use by.............. it doesn't matter if you explain them plenty of good tech reasons. By doing this, in my opinion is worst than analyse the problem when we are in front to an old vintage component.

We also refer to IPC J-STD-002A solderability test of components, but we perform tests only when components are very old and we have to solder them whith a weak NC paste or flux. Clean paste or flux often they solve problems of old oxided terminals.

What about electrical point of view for old components?

Q. to all : any EMS experience like when your Customer audits your facility for manufacturing readiness and when they ask you: what about control of component vintage ? or how do you handle the component shelf life on your facility? etc. - what is the answer? Do you refer to your own internal oprating instruction taylored on your kind of production or do you refer also to some Industrial Standard like IPC, JEDEC, etc ? in case of yes which are those Standard?
