is there any information we can get about conformal coating of lead free solder pastes ( WS shuold be no diferent, but what @ no clean ?)

my 2 cents here --- Even though the boards need not be cleaned after SMT when using no clean flux, you will still have to clean them before conformal coating.....and most solvents used to clean boards before coating will take out the no clean flux residues.

unless of course, it can be proved that the coating sticks to the uncleaned board and shows no defects as per IPC specs....but it doubt it

Hi Amol,

We use the PVA system and also conformal coat over no-clean reflow solder as well as no-clean wave. We use a Humiseal coating and thinner.

Hi URL, ours is a retrofit of a older machine which never worked. ours has a needle, extended syray head and a gross spray head. teaching is done manually by using a control pendant. is is similar to what you have?

Ours is the same configuration as that, we run with neat Humiseal 1B31 through the needle valve and a 1:1 blend 1B31/Butanone (MEK) in the spray valves. Programming is done via a PC using the pendant and the path is point to point trained on scrap PCB. We then coat, strip and fine tune the program before releasing into production.

What information are you specifically after?

Hi Steve, We just got the retrofitted machine and i was trained by PVA on Pathmaster. I just wanted to know if many other ppl were using it so i can post any questions/comments on the programming aspect.

The coating we will be using is envibar, and unfortunately i cannot strip it to correct for programming errors....also, when programming the paths, how do u ensure that the whole board is covered (and that you dont leave tiny areas between different patterns?)

Yes, I have been using it for 4 years now. We have the 4 axis, 3 head, 2 lines. Inspection station and ir oven. I have to say you will NOT get better support anywhere in this industry than from PVA. Their crew is top notch, always going above and beyond to please their customers. The machine itself is outstanding. We were running 3 shifts 5 people each shift and never were caught up. after we bought it we moved down to 1 shift and 2 people. most of our time was masking and board prep. I don't mask anything with tape or peelable spot mask anymore. I use on occasion some masking boots on header pins. (only to speed up programming and running time). After the oven I let boards cool down then run the next side. Work orders that used to take 2-3 days now take about 3 hours to complete. We run the chain conveyer and everything runs in a fixture, mostly designed in house. Programming on our machine is done with a trackball. I believe they now offer a CAD data option. Very low maintence machine and very precise. Well built and well worth the money. In our case it paid for itself within the first year. We use it mainly for the 1B31, however I have used other acrylics, silicones in it. (we have to separate tanks and lines and heads for the different materials, you don't want to mix them especially with silicones) I have also used it to fill vias with rtv (vac testing). It has been very useful to us in more ways than just coating. I hope this has helped you. If you have any other questions please feel free.
