A signal conditioner is a device that converts one type of electronic signal into another type of signal. Its primary use is to convert a signal that may be difficult to read by conventional instrumentation into a more easily read format. In performing this conversion, several functions may take place.

Signal conditioning is a vital process performed within the Data Acquisition System. It involves the manipulation of the analog signal output from the sensors to prepare it for the next stage of processing. Signal conditioning amplifies and converts the signals from the sensors or transducers into an easy-to-read, compatible form for data acquisition (DAQ) system.

This process of ‘conditioning’ the signals is performed through an instrument called a signal conditioner. It is the first step towards getting an accurate measurement of the signal with data acquisition systems.

Signal Conditioner is important as it provides the essential circuitry between the sensor and the data acquisition system. This circuit ensures proper conditioning of the output before any further signal processing can occur. Each specific sensor serves as an interface to excite, scale, or buffer the real-world signals and send them for further processing.

A signal conditioner is a circuit that performs a set of operations on a signal and makes it suitable for further processing. It consists of an input and an output, where input is usually a sensor that measures the variable.

Signal Isolator

The signal reliability can be achieved by two essential parameters like high-quality equipment as well as a good measurement. Sometimes, if the installation of equipment cannot be done properly then the signal can have inferior quality. To overcome this problem, signal isolators or conditioners are used to protect the equipment. These isolators are an excellent blend of frequency response, signal handling, and accuracy. Some of the isolators are suitable for two-way field communication which can be achieved by the superimposition of digital communication.

Signal Isolator is an electrical device that is used to remove earth loop errors that are caused by noise & signal interference problems. These isolators use several electronic methods for interrupting the two grounds connections while passing an exact signal with accuracy or with a small loss. Signal isolator gives electrical isolation among the input & output circuits. The signal can be connected through a transformer to the output. These isolators also break the straight electrical path among loop ends. They guard against hazardous calculated variable voltages & enhance protection from spikes and surges.

The main function of a signal isolator is to split the electric (galvanic) lane among circuits from grounded to dissimilar potentials. An electrical lane can be defined as a lane where there is a straight electrical link among electrical circuits which allows the flow of current. The working of signal isolator can be done using the following two methods namely analog and discrete. Analog signal isolation includes an isolation transformer for chopping, isolating, and recreating the signal. Whereas discrete signal generation is used to chop, optically transmit, and recreating the signal. When the signal isolator used this discrete technique is named opt-isolators. The selection of these two methods can be done based on the circuit requirement.

Signal isolators are classified into different types. Resistance Input isolators is isolator used as slidewire, strain, RTD, & potentiometer. The second type of signal isolators is millivolt isolators which are used as millivolt transmitters and thermocouple. Lastly, current or voltage isolators used as deviation alarm notification, alarm tripping, & other particular application transmitters.
