Signal Calibrator

Signal calibrator, also called Milliamp Calibrators, or Loop Calibrators are used to calibrate and troubleshoots signal transmitters and loops. Usually, it also come supplied with a built in DC voltage calibration capability

Sensors such as pH meters, temperature probes, and positive displacement flowmeters output signals that cannot travel long distances and /or susceptible to noise from other wiring cables in the same conduit. A loop powered calibrator is supplied with a 24-volt DC power. It converts the analog measure signal to a 4-20mA current signal. It is using the supplied voltage rom the signal loop to power itself.

Digital Pressure Gauge

Digital pressure gauges are instruments that are designed to sense the pressure from a liquid or gas and provide a direct reading of that pressure value on a digital display, rather than requiring an operator to read a value from the position of a needle on a pressure scale as with analog pressure gauges.

It makes use of transducer that converts the value of pressure into electrical signal whose characteristics reflect the magnitude of the pressure reading.

Digital pressure gauges come in several different types, depending on application and design. One broad distinction is between portable versus installed gauges. Some digital pressure gauges are designed to be for field use and can be carried to different locations to perform local readings, while some other digital pressure gauges are intended for installation into specific applications such as pipeline, and are for continuous use and more permanent application.

Digital pressure gauges need power sources to operate, typically it is powered by battery power while analog gauges do not need a source of power as the pressure directly causes the calibrated movement of the needle on the display.

When selecting digital pressure gauges, the specification to be consider is as follow:

  • Gauge style - will be use for measurement of positive pressure. negative pressure (vacuum), or both (compound)?
  • Case material - both metal cases and plastic case materials are commonly available. COnsideration should be given to the overall weight of the unit and the environmental conditions to which it will be exposed.
  • Gauge wetted parts - the wetted components in a pressure gauge represent those which will come into direct contact with the media whose pressure is being measured, such as the liquid in a pipe. The materials from which the wetted parts are constructed should be compatible with the characteristics of the media such as its pH and corrosiveness.
  • Gauge connection size – the normal diameter of the gauge connection
  • Gauge port location – establishes the location of the port connection relative to the gauge face, with the typical port location being on the bottom of the unit.
  • Gauge accuracy – measures the ability of the gauge to reflect the actual pressure reading, typically denied in terms such as the +/- percentage of the full-scale reading on the gauge.
  • Display type – the type of digital display used in the pressure gauge, such as Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
  • Number of Display Digits – indicates the number of independent digits shown in the digital display, such as 3,4, or 5.
  • Gauge resolution – represents the granularity or fineness to which the gauge can register the reading. So, a digital pressure range that measures psi with two decimal places to the right of the decimal point will have a resolution of 0.01 psi. This parameter is also known as gauge tolerance.
  • Power Source – identifies the source of electrical power needed to run the display and electronics of the gauge. Power sources for digital pressure gauges are typically battery, solar -power, or loop power, such as a 4-20mA loop current.
  • Operating temperature range – shows the recommended temperature range over which the digital pressure range is designed to perform.
  • Sampling rate – indicates the frequency with which measurements are being made by the gauge.

Advantages of digital pressure gauges over analog gauges

  1. The digital display can provide readings in a variety of pressure units, eliminating the need for the operator to perform calculations to get readings in alternative units of measure.
  2. There is no parallax error from a digital pressure gauge. With a needle style analog gauge, the position of the operator’s line of sight relative to the plane of the gauge dial can result in errors to be observed pressure reading. Digital pressure gauges simply display the numerical value of the pressure.
  3. Because digital pressure gauges are powered units, they feature back-lit display capability, enabling readings to be taken in low light conditions easily.
  4. The units offer steady readings in applications where there are high levels of vibration which would cause the needles of analog pressure gauges to bounce around.
  5. Many digital pressure units can be set to different ranges of pressure, while analog models are designated use in a predetermined pressure range.
  6. They generally offer greater precision than mechanical gauges.

Multimeter

Multimeter is also known as volt-ohm meter, is a handheld tester used to measure electrical voltage, current (amperage), resistance, and other values. Multimeters come in analog and digital versions and are useful for everything from simple tests, like measuring battery voltage, to detecting faults and complex diagnostics. This instrument includes two leads or probes namely red and black ports. The black color lead is used to plug into the common port, whereas the red color leads plugs into other ports based on the requirement. Once the leads are plugged in, the knob can be switched ON, then to obtain a reading from the meter, the end of each probe is touched to the end of the terminal of components.

These multimeters are capable of different readings based on the model. So basic types of multimeter are mainly used to measure amperage, resistance, voltage, checks continuity and a complete circuit. More advanced multimeter able to test the following values:

  • Resistance in Ohms
  • Capacity in Farads
  • The temperature in Fahrenheit/Celsius
  • AC Voltage & Amperage
  • Inductance Henrys
  • DC Voltage & Amperage
  • Frequency in Hz
  • Conductance in Siemens
  • Decibels
  • Duty Cycle

Advantages and Disadvantages of Digital Multimeter

The advantages of  digital multimeter include the following.

  • It gives an automatic o/p display.
  • The measurement results of the meter can record and store in memory and synchronizes through a PC
  • It includes auto polarity functions
  • The meter reading accuracy cannot depend on the charging of the battery
  • It ensures accuracy
  • Resistance toward mechanical damage.
  • Multifunctionality
  • Zero adjustments cannot be required
  • Measurement accuracy is high
  • Measuring ranges can be selected through manual or automatically

The disadvantages of digital multimeter include the following

  • As compared to analog, it is expensive
  • This multimeter does not work properly through measurement fluctuations. It can be tricky to discover one for your exact needs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Analog Multimeter

The advantages of analog multimeter include the following.

  • Possibility of achieving measurements at below-30 ° ะก temperature
  • Power utilization is not required from the fixed power supply while measuring current and voltage
  • When high precision is not necessary, then quick operation through a large amount of measurement can be done.
  • By using this instrument, all measurements can be done simply.
  • The signal level can be observed

The disadvantages of analog multimeter include the following

  • These meters are large
  • These are expensive
  • Voltage polarity cannot be recognized
  • They are susceptible to vibration or shock.
  • The movement of the pointer is slow and it cannot be utilized to measure voltages through frequencies above 50 HZ.
  • Incorrect because of the earth magnetic field effect.
  • An unexpected change in the signal can notice through an analog multimeter more quickly as compared with a digital multimeter.
  • These are sensitive to vibration, mechanical damage.
  • Input resistance is less, thus a high error while measuring less voltage
