California Micro Devices Announces Enhanced EMI Filtering with ESD Protection for GSM Handsets

Feb 25, 2003

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb 24, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via Comtex/ -- California Micro Devices (Nasdaq: CAMD) today announced the CSPEMI400, a new single-chip, application-specific integrated passive (ASIP(TM)) device that provides industry-leading, enhanced EMI (electromagnetic interference) filtering and ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection for SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards inserted into wireless GSM handsets. The CSPEMI400 complements California Micro Devices' broad portfolio of CSP (chip scale package) devices for stand-alone ESD protection and EMI filter arrays with ESD protection, making it the most extensive in the industry.

SIM Card Usage and the CSPEMI400

The majority of wireless handsets in Asia and Europe use the GSM phone standard that require SIM cards to store essential data specific to individual geographic regions. Handset users often change the SIM card when they travel to another region to avoid additional roaming charges. Due to the frequent handling of these cards, the I/O pins of the handset's SIM interface may be subjected to many ESD strikes, which can render the handset inoperable. In addition to providing protection against ESD strikes, the CSPEMI400 improves performance by rejecting high-frequency signals and radiation and preventing them from hindering the operation of the overall system.

"As an industry-standard interface for GSM-class phones, SIM cards are expected to grow dramatically in coming years," said Kyle Baker, vice president of marketing at California Micro Devices. "They require a high level of ESD protection and effective EMI filtering, both of which are provided by the CSPEMI400. The device represents a logical progression in extending our portfolio of application-specific ASIP devices in a low-profile CSP package," he continued.

Other Mobile Applications

The CSPEMI400 may also be used with other I/O interfaces to provide EMI filtering and ESD protection for other mobile electronics, such as PDAs, handheld PCs and MP3 players. The device is particularly well suited to these mobile electronics because of its small package format and easy-to-use pin assignments.

Intelligent Design

California Micro Devices' CSPEMI400 provides industry-leading EMI filtering performance (attenuation of 28dB or better at frequencies greater than 1GHz) and ESD protection (+ or - 10kV contact discharge per IEC61000-4-2) compared to competing solutions. The layout of the CSP ball grid array simplifies flow-through routing, facilitating PCB design. It integrates 20 discrete passives into a single-chip, low-profile CSP device. This high level of integration provides 87 % board space savings. Customers' total cost of ownership is also lowered through: an increase in manufacturing throughput, higher reliability, less inventory, lower manufacturing costs (fewer insertions) and better manufacturability.

Pricing and Availability

The CSPEMI400 will be sampling in early March, and is priced at $0.40 each in 1,000 units. Volume production is scheduled for April 2003.
